Happy Halloween 2013

Happy Halloween to all!
The candy bucket is filled and waiting by the door for trick-or-treaters (a little lighter thanks to me, but ‘tis All Hallow’s Eve)!
Yesterday was the office’s Halloween party, complete with a haunted house, BBQ lunch, and costume contest.
Well, guess what, we won most original (oh there were prizes)!
Can you guess what we were?

Nope, here’s a clue:

Still no, it's OK. I hadn't heard of the TV show until a few weeks ago.

I yea, I broke character for the pic on the right. Julie's mom was a prostitute and is now a crime fighter. She doesn't smile.

Anyway, my motto is to always BRING IT for a costume party. So here are some off my favorite costumes of year’s past:

Crazy cat lady and Snookie doing the Ouija with Dolly Parton.

Enjoy!

Kim's List of Halloween Movies

Yesterday I let Ethan take over for as a pre- Halloween treat for you dear readers. You also might have noticed, but from here on out, I  am going to refer to my husband by his name (which I rarely use, I'm nicknames only). I've decided that referring to E as "the hubs" is played out and annoying.

Anyhoo, E gave you his top 5 scary movie list, so today is my turn. Hands down, Hocus Pocus is the best Halloween movie, but, the discussion E and I had was regarding the best scary movies, sooooo Hocus Pocus is out.

Here are my top 5 scary movies (for Halloween) in no order:

1. The Shining (1980)
The acting is spot on, the music, and those girls at the end of the hallway- eeks.

2. Paranormal Activity (2007)
Ethan thinks this was stupid and not scary; however, it creeped me out (probably the way it was filmed, it was just so realistic).  After watching it, I needed to use the bathroom in the middle of the night (3 am-ish - close to the time referenced in teh movie). I was so freaked out still, I ran back to the bedroom and did a sliding belly flop back into the bed taking most of the covers and Ethan's legs with me. He wasn't pleased.

3.  Exorcist (1972)
A classic. IMO, this is the best possession movie made, even with the newer Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Conjuring, Mama (which I haven seen yet).

4. It (1990)
With a top scary movie list, you have to have something by Stephen King and who isn't afraid of that creepy clown?

5. Scream (1996)
I was in high school when this came out, just as the characters in the movie, so it was very realist to me. That ghost face mask (shudder).

It seems they just used to make horror movies better back in the good ol' days. What about you? Will you watch horror movies- if so, what are some of your favorites?

Ethan's Favorite Halloween Movies

Hello, Pink Droppers, this is Kim's husband, Ethan.  I've been granted reprieve from Kim's "be seen, not heard" instructions, and thus I'm going to showcase the five movies that will get even the grumpiest lil' pumpkin in the Halloween spirit, in no particular order:

Alien (1979) Poster
Alien (1979)

So you're in deep space, years from Earth.  Would you pick up a hitchhiker?  No?  What a hitchhiker that gestates in your sternum, killing you when it hatches?  Still no?  What if said hitchhiker grows to a seven-foot tall, acid-for-blood killing machine?  Definitely no?  Well then you haven't grown up in East Tennessee, as that would be some tasty roadkill.  Ridely Scott's slow-building masterpiece tells the story of the doomed mining freighter Nostromo, who are awakened early from their hypersleep to investigate a strange signal coming from a nearby planetoid.  This ill-fated field trip brings back an unwanted organism that picks off the Nostromo crew one by one.  More psychological horror than gore, the film uses silence and dread rather than gore to keep the viewer on edge.  Throw in a haunting, metallic soundtrack, and you have a world-class creature feature.

ThingPoster.jpg

The Thing (1982)

Kurt Russell (don't laugh) stars in this 1980s cult classic as a member of a U.S. research team in Antarctica that stumbles upon a malevolent alien life form frozen in the deep Arctic ice.  Of course, this extraterrestrial popsicle can slowly consume humans, and upon completion, forms a perfect walking, talking, and (slightly more) psychopathic version of you.  Of course, there's also a massive Arctic storm going on outside, so no one can get in or out.  Fun!  Much gorier than Alien, but features some amazing special effects and makeup (remember kids, this is WAY before CGI and all that newfangled computer stuff).

Blair Witch Project.jpg

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

This entry might raise some eyebrows, but bear with me.  One of the most original horror films for its time, this is one of the first films to feature the now-overused "shaky cam" filming method (I'm looking at you, Cloverfield).  The premise is simple: three film students head to the wilderness around Burkitsville, Maryland to investigate the local legend of the Blair Witch.  They disappear without a trace, and the "found footage" from their camera makes up the film.  Personally, I think the scene where the three students are sitting in their tent at night, lost, tired and scared, and suddenly they hear a baby cry in the distance is one of the best scenes.  Ever.  If that scene does not give you goosebumps, you need to check your pulse.

Fun fact: This film was made for $750k, and grossed more than $248 million!

The Shining poster.jpg

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of insanity really needs no introduction.  Based on a Stephen King novel, the movie revolves around Jack Torrence, a writer who takes the job of winter caretaker in a old, massive Colorado hotel to work on his writing.  He takes along his wife and young son, and they soon encounter the ghosts occupying the property.  Not a gory film, but rather a study of a man's slow descent into madness.  Highly recommended.

A clown rips through a white background, with its monster claws, and a crazed smile. At the bottom, there are small photographs of the film's main characters (Richie, Eddie, Stan, Beverly, Mike, Ben & Bill).

It (1990)

Features Pennywise the homicidal demon clown (yes, really).  Pure nightmare fuel.

Happy Halloween!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Catching Up

The gov reopened and I've been crazy busy ever since!

I had time to attend the Blue Hope Bash to raise funds for Chris4Life (to fight colon cancer). It was such a wonderful and touching night, but of course I didn't take pictures! It is such a worthy cause and they are really doing great work in the fight against colon cancer. I can't wait to attend their walk next spring. If you have an opportunity to help support them, you definitely should!
I did grab this pic off Facebook though. Too bad I hunched over, my dress was cute. Most of the women in attendance wore blue, the color of colon cancer support.
On a lighter note, the event was held at a high end hotel in Georgetown and I think we spied a high end escort while we were waiting for valet (or maybe I watch too much Lifetime)!

We also had a chili cook-off at my office. I didn't win, but out of that I learned:
1. I might be obsessed with getting my chicken at a halal butcher. I made a white chicken chili using halal chicken meat and the butcher cleaned it so nice. I hate to clean raw chicken- blah.
2. I have got to get some Quorn grounds meat substitute. The winning chili was a VEGAN (yes, vegan) chili using this mushroom meat substitute. It was so delicious and I couldn't taste the difference.

Lastly, the girls finally got to get together for a HH. One of our stops was Co Co Sala.  If you're in the DC area and have a chocolate tooth, you have to check this place out. Hot chocolate flight and chocolate inspired martinis- yes, please!

Have a great weekend!

Better Late Than Never: Boys Behind the Blog

Oops!!! Work and life has been crazy, but the hubs did answer the Boys Behind the Blog link up questions, so here it is!

Round #5 Questions:
1. Describe yourself in 5 words.  Funny, moderately intelligent, squeezably-soft.
2. What is your biggest fear?  Being considered a failure in life by family/friends.
3. What is your favorite candy? Milky Way, plain dark chocolate, or Mounds bars
4. What was the best Halloween costume you've ever worn? (include pictures if you have them) I was a lumberjack (and I'm okay) with my wife.  She was more excited because she thought lumberjacks drank maple syrup all day.

I like him better as a fireman ;) He has been a lumberjack twice, so yea, I would say that's his favorite.

5. Who is your favorite football team? Tennessee (college); Seattle Seahawks (NFL)

An Anniversary Weekend

This past weekend was mine and the hubs 6th year wedding anniversary.

The "traditional" Anniversary gift for 6 is iron. The hubs got me an adorable handmade iron ring holder off Etsy (I'm actually pretty impressed he even knows what that Etsy is). For my gift to E, I was looking for something iron we could put in the garden when I came across some personalized stones. When the box arrived, E asked if I ordered the cats' tombstones. Now that it's in the garden, it does look like a tombstone!!!
For our anniversary dinner, I had a hankerin' for some Indian food (plus it was cold and pouring, so I didn't want to go anywhere too fancy). I tried to take an artsy photo of my meal (saag paneer); however, neglected the fact that it looks like a baby's full diaper.
Oh, I am also in LOVE with my new eyeshadow palette after I read rave reviews on Stephanie's blog!  It was perfect for work and then also the evening when we went out.

Attack of the Hubs

This weekend is mine & the hubs 6th year wedding anniversary.
This post was going to be dedicated to how much I still love the Big E & how much we’ve been through  together. How we’ve moved 5x together since then,  he went back to law school, we adopted 2 cats, bought our first home together, yada yada yada.
Instead I give you, what happens after 6 yrs of marriage. You can’t leave your laptop open and logged into your Pinterest account without this happening.
He said he also debated updating my Facebook status as well … something to do with farting. I’m glad he showed some restraint.

Happy Anniversary my Boo. I will get you back.

Some Fall Spring Cleaning

I really wanted to participate in Adriana and Company's "feel like I’m 21" link up, but I unfortunately have no photos from that day here.  Sadly, when I turned 21,  no one had cell phones, digital cameras, or even Facebook (sigh). All my pics are in a box at my parent’s house. And we all know a blog just isn’t a blog unless there are pics. Lots of pics.
I decided I need to get those pictures from my parent’s house along with my other boxes of college and high school memorabilia.  For the blogs sake. In order to do this, some other things need to happen (btw, I love to clean and organize, so this is a fun project for me)

Oh, color coded planning charts. Tina Fey, you so get me!

Dirty Little Secrets

Yesterday, I mentioned how much I loved Lifetime's portal of Jodi Arias in their made for TV classic, Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret.
Anyhow, that is the muse for today's post. Here are my "dirty little secrets" (the G version).

  • Obviously Lifetime movies. A woman at work said, "I always wondered who watched that crap."
  • My ambivalence (mild disdain?) to football. This was a huge deal growing up in the South.
  • I eat peanut butter right out of the jar. Usually in front of the TV. The hubs will not eat PB in our house at all.

This is my playground
  • When I think I play with my hair and then if I see a split end, I have to chop it. I have done this at work shamefully.
  • I’ve pretty much forced my husband into a vegetarian diet. Turkey bacon with breakfast, seafood restaurants for special occasions!
  • I hate Chinese food.
  • I’m in my thirties. (Sometimes it slips out that I’m in “my twenties” still)
  • I “ride” the grocery carts through the parking lot like a child. But I’m careful.
  • I love my kitties and treat them like babies. I dress them up for the holidays. They love it.

  • I freaking still love Oasis & Dave Matthews Band.
Do you have any "dirty little secrets" you'd like to share?

The Worst Weekend There Was*

This past weekend was supposed to be the Best Weekend Ever. We were going to go back to my hometown of Knoxville, TN to see family and friends, and go to the UT vs. GA game. Instead, I worked ALL WEEKEND. Not like got stuff done around the house. Like actually reported into the office. Anyway, this weekend taught me something very important. I *might* be a complainer. I think I asked my co-worker every hour if he was done and if I could go home.

I don’t mean to be a whiny brat. My big mouth just always gets me in trouble.

Also, I wore jeans into work and caught a glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror and now officially need to get some new jeans and bra due to my weight gain. Time to hit the mall and the gym and log into myfitnesspal.com!

The highlight of my lame weekend was Lifetime’s Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret movie. Talk about my dirty little secret-  my love for all these movies they’ve done on criminal media storms (Scott Peterson, Casey Anthony, Amanda Knox, Elizabeth Smart, etc.)

*This wasn't really the worst weekend ever- I love my co-workers and I'm grateful I have a job!
Hope your weekend was more eventful than mine!

Quality vs. Quantity

I am currently reading The Dinner by Herman Koch & there are several passages about fine food. I think the character says something like people that say they don't want to spend money on going out to eat for food going out have no idea about food.
Well, let me tell you, I am one of those people! I hate fine dining and never want to spend all that money on one meal when I could go to Chick-fil-A for like 30 meals for the same price. This led me to the conclusion, I might be a quantity over quality person, but I don't think I should be that way.

Food:
Should I be a fabulous French woman and choose a delectable dark chocolate petit four or scarf down a Wendy's frosty?
Clothing:
Should I go for multiple pairs of  DSW and TJ Maxx pairs of shoes, or get one great pair of Louboutin nude pumps I could wear every day?

Let's just look in a drawer at my office shall we:

Um, case settled? I am what I am says Popeye.
What about you- do you choose quality over quantity?

Well one thing you can never get too much quantity of is some back that azz up music & linking up with Whitney!!!

Pardon my Dust!

So this blog is a bigger mess than our Congress right now... Just Kidding! Nothing's a bigger mess than THAT right now.
Anyhoo- I decided that I would like to dabble in some graphic design on the bloggity blog, and ya' know what- this shizz be hard. Please ignore my wacky fonts and sizes while I search the Interwebz to try to figure this all out.
Besides trying to fix the blog now, here are some random thoughts...

  • Have you heard this, its apparently been around for a while, but "stressed" is "desserts" backwards.
  • Someone went apple picking this past weekend and we've had- apples, apple cake, apple butter, and apple pumpkin cake since. Oh and I put apple butter on a chocolate chip cookie. I am blaming the office for my lack of weight loss.
  • Going berry picking or apple picking is high on my list of crap I want to do with the hubs. Too bad he won't go with me (unless we have kids, then he said he would- ha).
  • Thus shutdown has now impacted my ability to go to the TN/ GA game and see my peeps this weekend. I'm not happy.
  • My anniversary is coming up and the traditional gift is "iron". What.am.I.going.to.get??! Oh yea, hubs doesn't want anything decorative for the yard or any tools. He wants an Amazon gift card. WTF?
  • Murphy Law: I  put flannel sheets on the bed & bought new rising boots and it got warmer again.

Books, Books, Books for Fall

I love to read (heck, what else would I do on the Metro for 20 minutes) and I have been meaning to add some new books to my library list, so I was beyond excited to come across Semi-Charmed Life's book challenge for the Fall. I had such a great time on this scavenger hunt for books I'm planning on reading this Fall.
5: Read a book that does not have "the," "a" or "an" in the title. Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

10: Read a book that has been featured in Oprah's Book Club. The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen

10: Read a book that takes place in the state where you currently live. If you do not live in the U.S., read a book that takes place in the country where you live. Every Secret Thing by Laura Lippman

15: Read an epistolary novel, which is a book written in letters, emails, diary entries or other documents. Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger

15: Read a book first published in 2013.The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult
(I have been to get to this for forever now! Jodi is my fav author and I have forsaken her by waiting this long)

Yup, there she is signing my book at the National Book Fest a few years back.

15: Read a book with something spooky in the title. Notes from Ghost Town by Kate Ellison

20: Read a book with "air," "water," "earth" or "fire" in the title. Red Water by Judith Freeman

20: Read a book on which a television series has been based. Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman

25: Read a fiction book that has someone’s first and last name in the title. Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood

30: Read two books by the same author. They can be in the same series, but do not have to be. Co-authors do not count (i.e. the author must be the sole author of each book). The Tao of Martha and Jeneration X by Jen Lancaster

35: Read a fiction and nonfiction book about the same topic. We Were Soldiers Once... and Young Ia Drang - The Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam by Harold G. Moore, Joseph L. Galloway and The Things They Carried  by Tim O'Brien
After reading Matterhorn, I feel like there is so much more I want to read on the Vietnam War.
